Featuring: Jeff Wessmiller

This is an interesting DVD. First it is originally marketed to poker fans who watch poker on TV (as I do) and the idea being they buy it, see how card cheats do the moves, then they put it away with their sports blooper DVD and never look at it again. Sure some kids will try to cheat using the material but who cares? Let'm get beat up. Really not much to discuss from a gambling aspect as while pretty good Jeff isn't yet (he is heading there and will get there) in the big leagues of gambling move guys. So I'm going to review this from a magicians stand point, not a gambling dude standpoint. You want hard core cheat stuff see Richard Turner. This is where it gets interesting.

There have been series of DVDs showing card moves. Like most of those series you have to filter through a load of stuff you'll never use and you end up finding the 5 to 7 items that will really help improve your presentation. By this I mean that once you learn card tricks you need to frame them. Some paintings are not interesting until you put the right frame around them and card magic is the same way. For example, you learn the Dai Vernon Poker Deal (Thompson and Ammar have it on tape, of course it is also in the Dai Vernon Book of Magic), it has that gambling hook, you like it and your presentation is just like ol' Dai liked it. You can walk up and do it from your stack or you can shuffle the cards a bit, just non-chalantly, then go into it. Which is better? The addition of the shuffling. That way when cousin Johnny says "he had 'em stacked! Had to be!" Uncle Bill can reply "yeah but...no...he shuffled them before doing the routine, he's the!
Devil!". Get it? If you can handle a deck outside the relm of the presentation it makes the presentation that much stronger. Now what does this have to do with Weapons of the Card Shark?

Now comes the fun part. On this DVD Jeff Wessmiller shows: False shuffles, card controls, false cuts, stack control, passes, gambler deals (seconds, bottom deals), glimpses, mucking cards, deck switches, stacking....we are talking a treasure chest of moves and all on ONE DVD! You can get this one DVD and save money because he didn't put a bunch of filler (remember, gambling exposer, not magic!) so the maker wanted one good DVD rather than three half arsed ones to suck your wallet dryer than mine already is. For you guys learning card magic or wanting to take your game to the next level this is one heck of a route to take.

Jeffs instructions are simular to what you find on the latest Daryl type dvds, shows the moves, explains the moves. There are no routines and it doesn't pretend to have routines. Just shows you the moves. Tell you what, you get this DVD and learn say the Zarrow or push through shuffle, the up the ladder cut or some other false cut, and a glimpse and you will be a better magician when it comes to presentation.

Not all the stuff is going to suit you, some is very tough (Jeff is better than average and some of the stuff like palming a deck needs big hands and I ain't got 'em) but you'll find enough to get you going. Like I said, as a gambling DVD I didn't find it to be great, as instructional to get card guys (you Blainiacs could use this) to a higher level by framing their card magic, this is a great resource.
